Cheers to Twenty-Fun!
Hey Loves! If I can remember correctly, I think this is the first post I've made in November! But, even when I am not on the blog, I am still creating content and memories behind the scenes! Lately, I have had lots of promo products that I have been shooting pics for, but not making blogposts about (so if you want to catch up on that fun stuff, check out my Instagram @theclosetcomber)! More importantly, November is my "Birth Month," if you couldn't tell! In other words, I celebrate my birthday from November 1st to November 30th, and I can assure you the month has been nothing short of fun—the reason why I am making my birthday post about two weeks after my bday! So far, November has been filled with shopping, traveling, and just a bit of bubbly. After all, I did turn the big 2-1! Honestly, alcohol really didn't excite me much, but buying a new dress certainly did! The hunt for the perfect party dress was a tad challenging, and once I found one, it was very difficult keeping it a secret. In the end, I revealed the perfect dress, was surrounded by my favorite people, and had the best birthday (and the party isn't over yet)! Whether you have a holiday party, birthday, or festive celebration (NYE will be here before we know it), this outfit is perfect for this time of year. You might even be raising a glass and saying, "Cheers" to the weekend or to being "Twenty -fun!" Keep on reading for not only all the outfit details, but my birthday adventures, and my 21 pieces of advice to people of all ages!
First, I will talk fashion because I know that's what you came for! Of course, there is always a story behind the garment; As much as I love clothes, I haven't bought a sparkly dress (well, a full sparkly dress) since my high school dance days. I obviously live for shiny things, but even I found it difficult to spend lots of money on a dress that I can't wear day to day. However, since I only turn 21 once, I knew a new dress was necessary. And now that I am of age, I can wear this to bars, clubs, casinos, etc., so I like to call it an investment! When searching for this blue baby, all I knew was that I wanted something moderately priced and covered in sequins, so I googled away to search for the perfect piece. The biggest struggle was finding something young and fun, but not cheap and tacky looking. And, as much as I love black, my closet is packed with so many LBDs (little black dresses) that I wanted something that was a change of pace. After agonizing over ordering a few different dresses, I missed my chance because I was dragging my feet and they sold out. Disgusted, I made one last effort to find something that was affordable but still "me" and I took a chance! I ordered this dress that only had one size left in stock, and I crossed my fingers in hopes it would fit. Turns out, I fell in love and the rest is history!
Now that you know how this dress entered my life, it's time to discuss all the details! The fact that I paid $45 for this made it worth it, but price was just the icing on the cake. Blue is my absolute favorite color, and I was so thrilled to have my Cinderella moment. Fun Fact: Cinderella has always been my favorite princess because she had blonde hair and wore a blue dress! I guess you could call this my modern take on a classic! The color stuns because each time it catches the light, it looks like a different shade, but nonetheless, beautiful hues of blues! Aside from the color, the silhouette is phenomenal! I love that it is a bit slinky, though it isn't too tight or so short that it makes you feel uncomfortable. It hugs the body in all the right places, making this both fun and flattering...a.k.a a match made in heaven! The above-the-knee hem shows off those legs, and the v-neck exposes enough décolletage for a shiny (not gaudy) accessory. I know that spaghetti straps are a bit of a turn off when wearing this in PA in the winter, but most bars/clubs are hot inside, especially when you are dancing the night away. Even formal parties can get toasty when they involve lots of people! Basically, you will be thankful you have a sleeveless number, but if you are chilly, you can throw on a fun coat or shawl (maybe even some faux fur for extra glam)! One last thing you want to show off is the strappy back! The criss-cross design allows for added flair, and believe it or not, added support. Those extra straps help to hold up the dress and keep it in place! Underneath it all, throw on a bandeau (essentially a tube top) because you don't want any distracting bra straps to take away from your dress. Once you have the basics covered, grab a fun rhinestone necklace and a pair of block heel shoes that will allow you to sparkle and shine, 100% of the time!
Even though I said my bargain dress was the icing on the cake, the actual icing on the cake was delicious and adorable! Before I get into the sweet treats, I'll give you a recap of my birthday weekend! It was off to an amazing start when I packed my bags to go to NYC! Yes, I spent two days in my favorite city in the world. I won't get into the story, but it ironically worked out that our little family trip was planned that weekend. New York City is always a great time; we froze on the double decker bus tours, ate lots of pizza, visited Times Square—all sorts of touristy things. My dad actually came with us, which was exciting considering he hasn't been to NYC since his honeymoon with my mom 36 years ago! Needless to say, it was a whole new experience for him! I first went to NYC when I was just 11 years old, around the time of my birthday, and my mom and I watched the Rockettes. Ever since, I have been infatuated with the city and fall in love every single time I go. Ten years later, I am still in awe of the beautiful buildings and bustling streets! Traveling home on Sunday (my real bday), wasn't the most exciting part, but being back in my hometown and eating yummy cake was a great end to my birthday! I was definitely exhausted, though my heart was full (with love and calories)! "The Closet Comber" cake was the cutest surprise—my mom joked about buying another cake because her and my brother "dislike" (they still ate some) ice cream cake, though I didn't think she actually would. The more, the merrier, right?! It was a birthday/weekend packed full of fun, memories, and lots of sugar!
As part of my unconventional blogpost, I also wanted to share 21 pieces of advice I've learned throughout the years. I am certainly not done learning or growing, but along my journey, I have experienced so much that has made me the person I am today:
1. Don't worry about being overdressed for an occasion—there is no such thing!
2. Never leave the house without a hairbrush. The wind is real, people!
3. Check the clearance racks first...only pay full price for things you need right away (it usually always goes on sale!)
4. Remember to drink water—cliché but so true!
5. Moisturize every morning and night. Your future self will thank you!
6. Coupons are your friend. No shame in saving money, girl!
7. When you're having a bad day, pizza is always the answer!
8. Don't pass up the opportunity to travel. Even little trips are an enriching experience!
9. Take time to reflect—on your day, your progress, your life. Personal growth is important.
10. Be patient with others and yourself. We all have struggles.
11. Look for the goodness in every one you meet, even if it's difficult at times.
12. Put down your phone and enjoy the moment, whatever it is.
13. Try not to put so much pressure on yourself. Just do your best everyday.
14. Smile often! You may just make someone's day!
15. Instead of seeking revenge, "kill them with kindness." Don't choose to be petty.
16. Don't hold grudges. Bottling up anger only takes away your happiness.
17. Be inspired by bloggers/fitness gurus/etc., but don't compare yourself to them.
18. Try not to complain. It harvests bad energy.
19. Consider getting a pet. They bring so much joy you didn't know was missing from your life!
20. Don't be afraid to wear color...it is the sign of a true fashionista!
21. Most importantly, Be unapologetically you! Wear fun outfits, stand out in the crowd, and let your personality shine through. Don't let the opinions of others prevent you from living life!
I was hoping I would be able to get my 21st birthday post up before I turned 22! I have really been taking advantage of my birth month, which is why the blog was a little postponed. The weekend after NYC was spent going out with my college friends, then I went on a shopping spree, and the list goes on! I'm just taking my own advice and enjoying the moment! The funny thing about my 21st is that, like I said, I wasn't that excited to drink (so far, I've only had one alcoholic drink that I actually like, and it is VERY fruity), I was just excited to get a glitzy new outfit and socialize! The festive glitter sash was also an added bonus, thanks to my friend Kaitlyn! And, since I was pretty much the first of my friends to turn 21, I have a lot of weekend plans (and excuses to dress up) in the next coming months! Sure, all the celebrating is a great time, but my favorite part is getting to celebrate with friends and family. Let me know in the comments your fave bday tradition! As far as getting older, it is a bit scary to think about, but it's important to be grateful for another year on this earth...something I take for granted at times. And with all the wrinkle serum I use, I plan on looking Forever 21 (haha)! So, for anyone attending Christmas parties, New Year's Gatherings, Bday Bashes, or looking for a reason to get a little fancy, comb those closets for anything that catches the light. The more sparkles, the better! If you are too busy popping bottles, then shop my links below! Happy Closet Combing and Cheers to 21, or shall I say twenty-fun?!
